Microbial Behaviour and Calcite Precipitation as Controls on Neoarchean Microbialite Morphology
نویسنده
چکیده
The early evolution and diversification of life can be constrained by analysing the morphology of well preserved microbial communities. However, stromatolite morphology is a complex function of biological, chemical, and physical processes. Thus, to constrain microbial behaviour, the influences of various processes need to be carefully extracted. In some Neoarchean microbialites, physical and chemical processes can be well characterised. Fenestrate microbialites from the ~2.55 Ga Carawine Formation, Western Australia, and the 2.6-2.52 Ga Campbellrand Subgroup, South Africa, provide outstanding opportunities to constrain the aggregate behaviour of Neoarchean microbial communities.

Mineralogy and Microbial Diversity of the Microbialites in the Hypersaline Storr's Lake, the Bahamas.
Microbialites found in the low-light-intensity, hypersaline waters of Storr's Lake (SL), San Salvador Island, the Bahamas, were investigated with respect to their morphology, mineralogy, and microbial diversity. Previously described microbialite morphologies, as well as a newly identified "multi-cuspate" morphology, were observed at various depths. Electron microscopy analysis revealed the pres...

As one of the emerging soil improvement techniques, microbial induced calcite precipitation (MICP) can bond soil grains together and improve the engineering properties of soil [1]. bacteria produces urease enzyme can catalyze urea to carbonate and result in calcite precipitation in elevated pH environment. The forms of calcite precipitation around the bacteria limit the availability of oxygen a...
متن کاملMicrobial mat controls on infaunal abundance and diversity in modern marine microbialites.
Microbialites are the most abundant macrofossils of the Precambrian. Decline in microbialite abundance and diversity during the terminal Proterozoic and early Phanerozoic has historically been attributed to the concurrent radiation of complex metazoans. Similarly, the apparent resurgence of microbialites in the wake of Paleozoic and Mesozoic mass extinctions is frequently linked to drastic decl...
متن کاملInner workings of thrombolites: spatial gradients of metabolic activity as revealed by metatranscriptome profiling
Microbialites are sedimentary deposits formed by the metabolic interactions of microbes and their environment. These lithifying microbial communities represent one of the oldest ecosystems on Earth, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying the function of these communities are poorly understood. In this study, we used comparative metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses to characterize the sp...

Our paper (Arp et al. 2003) revises previous studies of Kaźmierczak and Kempe (1990, 1992), Kempe and Kaźmierczak (1990a, 1990b, 1993), and Kempe et al. (1996, 1997) on Lake Satonda reefs with regard to biofilm calcification and microbialite formation. We confirm that the transfer of bottom waters of increased alkalinity (due to sulfate reduction) to shallow water layers (mixolimnion) principal...
